Situation

1080 Architecture approached Hush Acoustics with a unique project for Mobius Benefit Administrators, who had recently transitioned into a new open office space spanning two stories. The modern building, characterized by its expansive glass walls and steel decks, created an environment that was visually striking but acoustically challenging. The space resembled an echo chamber, where noise levels were significantly amplified, disrupting the intended collaborative atmosphere. Mobius’ CEO, aiming to break away from traditional office layouts, moved from a closed-box office design to an open, collaborative environment. This shift, while innovative, brought with it heightened noise levels that affected staff productivity and comfort.

Challenge

The open office design featured extremely high ceilings and an abundance of hard surfaces, which compounded the acoustic issues. The challenge was to reduce noise and reverberation throughout the space while maintaining the aesthetic appeal of the office. It was also crucial that all acoustic solutions align seamlessly with Mobius’ branding and design preferences. Hush Acoustics was tasked with providing ceiling and wall products that would effectively address the acoustic challenges without compromising the modern, sleek design of the office.

Solution

Hush Acoustics developed a comprehensive acoustic solution tailored to the specific needs of the Mobius office space. The approach involved a combination of ceiling and wall treatments designed to absorb sound and reduce reverberation while complementing the overall design aesthetic.

1. Circular Linear Baffles

The installation began with the strategic placement of circular linear baffles across the open office areas. These baffles were chosen not only for their sound absorption capabilities but also for their ability to add a dynamic visual element to the space. The circular design helped to break up sound waves, effectively reducing the echo effect caused by the high ceilings and hard surfaces.

2. Custom Wall Panels

In quieter booths and individual workspaces, Hush Acoustics installed custom wall panels that provided targeted sound absorption. These panels were designed with two layers of acoustic material, featuring a subtle orange layer beneath the surface. This design choice allowed the panels to serve both functional and aesthetic purposes, aligning with Mobius’ branding while enhancing the acoustics in these more private areas.

3. Element Colour Series Integration

To ensure a cohesive look throughout the office, Hush Acoustics utilized its Element Colour series, which offers a wide range of color options. The panels chosen for this project seamlessly integrated with the existing color scheme, particularly the use of “Fog” panels in larger meeting booths. These panels were installed behind TV monitors to help reduce reverberation in these frequently used spaces. The bright orange accents in the panels also reflected the dynamic and collaborative culture that Mobius wanted to promote within their new office environment.

Results

The collaboration between Hush Acoustics and 1080 Architecture resulted in a highly successful transformation of Mobius’ office space. The carefully selected and strategically placed acoustic solutions effectively reduced noise levels and minimized reverberation, creating a more comfortable and productive environment for staff.

The use of Hush Acoustics’ Element Colour series not only met the functional requirements but also enhanced the visual appeal of the office, ensuring that the acoustic treatments were an integral part of the overall design rather than an afterthought. The combination of circular linear baffles and custom wall panels delivered both aesthetic and acoustic benefits, making the office space both visually engaging and acoustically optimized.

Mobius Benefit Administrators expressed high satisfaction with the outcome, noting the improved work environment and the seamless integration of acoustic solutions with their brand identity. This project underscores Hush Acoustics’ ability to deliver customized, innovative acoustic solutions that address the specific needs of modern office spaces while maintaining a strong focus on design and branding.
