Since 2020, Hush Acoustics has been collaborating with Staples on a nationwide project to enhance the acoustic environment across their North American stores. The goal was to replace conventional materials with those offering superior acoustic properties, all while preserving Staples’ iconic brand look and feel. This ambitious project spans across the nation, aiming to transform the auditory experience in Staples stores without compromising on aesthetics.
Staples stores are typically designed as large retail spaces with concrete floors and high ceilings, which can amplify noise, especially when the store is not crowded. This acoustical challenge is particularly evident in the cashier areas, where effective communication between customers and staff is crucial. The cashier zones usually feature five to six booths, backed by vinyl-printed decor with a geometric pattern. Staples requested that Hush replicate this design using acoustic materials to maintain visual consistency while improving sound absorption.
Hush Acoustics devised a comprehensive solution tailored to Staples’ specific needs:
1. Acoustic Panels in Cashier Areas:
The Hush team transformed the existing vinyl-printed geometric designs into acoustic panels. Using shaped wall tiles in matching colors and patterns, they ensured the visual continuity of the branding while significantly enhancing sound absorption. These acoustic murals were created in 1×2 and 2×2 tile formats to facilitate easy installation and maintenance.
2. Custom Sliding Wall Panels:
To address the cluttered appearance and noise in the customer corridors, Hush designed custom sliding wall panels for Staples’ flagship stores. These panels, mounted on sliding racks or tracks, offer easy access to stock while helping to absorb ambient noise. The printed panels not only improve acoustics but also add a sleek, modern look to the store.
3. Crayola-Colored Acoustic Panels:
In the aisles dedicated to stationery, particularly crowns, markers, and pens, Hush installed Crayola-colored and patterned acoustic panels. These not only enhance the store’s visual appeal but also contribute to a quieter, more pleasant shopping experience for customers.
4. Desk and Breakout Spaces:
With the introduction of new desk and breakout spaces in Staples’ flagship stores, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, Hush provided desk dividers to ensure safe and sound-friendly usage of these areas. These dividers doubled as acoustic barriers, maintaining a quiet and productive environment.
5. Acoustic Fins for High-Traffic Areas:
In areas with high foot traffic, Hush installed acoustic fins to further improve sound absorption. These fins effectively reduce noise levels, creating a more comfortable environment for both customers and employees.
The collaboration between Hush Acoustics and Staples resulted in a significant improvement in the acoustic quality of their stores, enhancing the overall shopping experience. The strategic integration of acoustic materials ensured that Staples’ branding remained consistent while effectively managing noise levels. Hush’s innovative solutions not only addressed the immediate challenges but also provided a scalable model for future store renovations.
By leveraging Hush Acoustics’ expertise in custom acoustic solutions, Staples has successfully created quieter, more inviting spaces that align with their commitment to customer satisfaction and brand integrity.
