Leed Well Certification

We’ve written before about why sustainable material choices matter in interior design. This is the companion piece — the practical one. If you’re pursuing certification on a project, acoustic materials can contribute in more ways than most specifiers expect, and the documentation you need is more straightforward to assemble than the process suggests.

A note before we start: rating systems are revised regularly, and credit names, thresholds, and point values shift between versions. Treat what follows as a map of where acoustics fits, then confirm the specifics against the current version of the rating system your project is registered under.

Why acoustics is the credit that gets left behind

Acoustic performance has been the weak link in green building for years. Post-occupancy studies have repeatedly found that certified buildings can score well on energy, daylight, and air quality while performing no better than conventional buildings — sometimes worse — on occupant satisfaction with sound.

The reason is structural. Energy performance is modelled early and defended throughout. Acoustics is often assumed to be handled by “the ceiling”, assigned to nobody in particular, and discovered late when a finish schedule has already been set. By then the surfaces that would have done the work are spoken for.

The fix is to treat acoustic performance as a specification item with a named owner from schematic design, exactly as you would daylighting or thermal comfort.

Three routes to contribution

Acoustic materials can support certification along three separate lines, and most specifiers only pursue the first.

1. Acoustic performance

Both major rating systems include direct acoustic requirements.

LEED addresses acoustics through an indoor environmental quality credit covering, depending on project type, background noise levels, sound isolation between spaces, reverberation time, and sound reinforcement. Requirements are notably more prescriptive for schools, where speech intelligibility carries obvious weight.

WELL gives sound a full concept of its own, and it is considerably more demanding. Features address sound mapping across the floorplate, maximum background noise levels by space type, sound barriers between spaces, reverberation time targets, minimum absorption performance for ceiling and wall surfaces, impact noise, and hearing conservation. WELL is where absorptive materials do their most direct work, because several features set explicit performance thresholds for the surfaces themselves rather than only for the finished room.

What this means practically: you need documented NRC values for the products you’re specifying, and you need to demonstrate coverage against the relevant surface area. Both come from published third-party test data, which should be part of any manufacturer’s standard submittal package.

2. Low-emitting materials

This is the contribution most often missed, because it isn’t intuitively an “acoustic” credit at all.

LEED’s low-emitting materials credit sets VOC emissions limits for interior products including ceilings, walls, and furnishings. Acoustic panels installed across large surface areas in occupied rooms fall squarely inside its scope. WELL sets comparable requirements through its air concept.

Third-party certification is the accepted compliance route, and GreenGuard Gold is among the recognised programs. Our felt carries GreenGuard Gold certification and the documentation is available in our Resources Hub for inclusion in submittal packages.

Polyethylene terephthalate is well suited to this. PET does not typically off-gas in any meaningful way, which makes it a low-emission choice in enclosed and long-occupancy spaces — precisely the environments where the credit matters most.

3. Materials and resources

Recycled content and material transparency credits reward disclosure and responsible sourcing. Our felt is manufactured from a mix of new and recycled PET with a minimum of 60% recycled content — new fibres are added for structural stability along with fire-retardant fibres.

Two things are worth understanding here. First, recycled content is calculated by cost across the whole project, so a single product category rarely wins the credit alone — it contributes to a total. Second, current rating systems increasingly reward disclosure over raw percentages. Environmental Product Declarations, Health Product Declarations, and material ingredient reporting can be worth as much as the recycled percentage itself. Ask manufacturers what documentation they hold, not just what their product is made from.

Building the submittal package

For each acoustic product on a certified project, you should expect to be able to produce:

  • Third-party acoustic test data with NRC values by mounting condition
  • Emissions certification — GreenGuard Gold or equivalent — with current certificate and scope
  • Recycled content percentage, split into pre- and post-consumer where required
  • Fire performance testing to the relevant standard for the jurisdiction and application
  • Environmental Product Declaration or material ingredient disclosure, where the project is pursuing transparency credits
  • Manufacturing location, if the project is pursuing any regional or supply chain criteria

If a manufacturer can’t produce these quickly, that is useful information at the specification stage rather than at submittal review.

Practical sequencing

Register the acoustic target early. Decide in schematic design which acoustic credits you’re pursuing and assign an owner. Retrofitting acoustic performance into a finish schedule that’s already been coordinated is the most expensive way to do it.

Reserve the ceiling. It’s the largest continuous surface in most spaces and the least contested. If lighting, mechanical, and sprinkler layouts are coordinated before acoustics is considered, you have lost your best surface.

Model, don’t guess. Reverberation targets are calculable. A rough calculation early is worth more than a precise one after installation.

Collect documentation as you specify. Gathering certification paperwork twelve months later, from a supplier whose certificate has since been renewed under a different number, is a genuinely miserable exercise. Ask for it at selection.

The argument beyond the plaque

Certification is a useful forcing function, but the underlying reason to specify well is simpler. Acoustic comfort is one of the most reliable predictors of whether people are satisfied with a building they spend their days inside — and it is one of the few aspects of building performance that occupants notice immediately and continuously.

A building can hit every energy target and still be a place nobody wants to work. Sound is a large part of the difference.
